Ryan Murphy: ‘Glee’ Will End After Next Season

Chrisie      Glee      0 Comments

The next season of “Glee” will be its last, so says co-creator of the series Ryan Murphy.

At a Paley Center event honoring FX Network last night, Murphy said the Fox dramedy will not go on beyond its sixth season. Murphy also admitted that the death of star Cory Monteith in July has forced him to come up with a different ending for the show.

In setting the end date so far in advance, Murphy becomes the latest showrunner to set a clear path to mapping out the conclusion of the show’s overarching storylines, which revolve around students and teachers at a high school in Ohio.

“The final year of the show, which will be next year, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story. I always knew that, I always knew how it would end,” Murphy told TVLine. ”I knew what the last shot was, he was in it. I knew what the last line was, she said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now.”

News of “Glee” coming to a close after its 2014 run arrives after the dramedy received a hearty double renewal in April, well before Monteith’s untimely death. Murphy’s confirmation of the plan to wrap the show after season six appeared to catch Fox and studio 20th Century Fox TV off guard on Thursday morning.

The lack of comment from either the network or studio indicated that the timetable for “Glee’s” finale has yet to be formally hammered out. Moreover, Fox and 20th TV camp may pursue ample opportunities for spinoff projects tied to one or more of the series’ vast cast of characters.

“Glee” said goodbye to Monteith in last week’s episode. In his review, Variety’s Brian Lowry called the episode “emotional and heartfelt” but also “a missed opportunity.” The episode gave “Glee” its best ratings of the season, delivering 7.4 million total viewers, or a 75% spike over the previous week.

Overall, however, the series has seen a steady decline in ratings since its sophomore season. September’s season five bow drew 5.2 million viewers, a 30% drop off since the season four premiere.

“Glee” was co-created by Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, who exec produce with Dante Di Loreto, Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner. The show bucked TV conventions by incorporating music into the storytelling — breaking the “Cop Rock” curse that had hung over TV tuner projects for nearly 20 years. The show has also earned accolades for its candid portrayal of teen issues, particularly in the area of sexuality and LGBT-related issues.

“Glee” yielded a bonanza of ancillary business for Fox and 20th TV, from music downloads, a slew of merchandise to a concert tour mounted in the show’s early seasons. It even sparked an unscripted show on a non-Fox network, ”The Glee Project,” which ran two seasons on Oxygen and revolved around a competition to win a small role on the series. And 20th Century Fox also released a 3D “Glee” concert pic in 2011.

“Glee’s” overnight success following its May 2009 debut (in a sneak peek, with the series commencing in earnest that fall) made stars out of its ensemble, most notably Jane Lynch, a veteran character actress; Lea Michele, a legit vet; and tyro thesp Chris Colfer.

But more than anyone else, “Glee” revved up Murphy’s reputation as a master showrunner, after a cool period in his career. He and Falchuk have since collaborated on FX’s “American Horror Story,” while Murphy and another “Glee” scribe, Allison Adler, on last year’s NBC comedy “The New Normal,” which was canceled after one season.

At present, Murphy is shepherding 20th TV’s first-ever pilot for HBO, the relationship-driven ensembler ”Open,” also with Adler.

Lea Michele Adopts an 8-Year-Old Dog

Chrisie      Uncategorized      0 Comments

Lea Michele has a new “little love” in her life.

As the Glee actress slowly moves on from the pain of losing boyfriend and costar Cory Monteith in July, she has adopted an 8-year-old pooch named Pearl.

“Today I would like to introduce you to Pearl. She’s 8 years old and is my new little love … Welcome Pearl!” she wrote Tuesday, sharing a photo of the caramel-colored pooch, who looks like a Pomeranian.

The proud new dog mom – whose on-screen alter ego gave Monteith a fond farewell in the show’s tribute episode last Thursday – posted two more shots of the pup within hours of sharing her news.

“Pearls first photo shoot!” Michele wrote alongside a snapshot of the dog posing with her at what appeared to be a professional photo shoot.

Michele, 27, has a big heart for needy animals. She once saved a litter of six kittens she found wandering around the Paramount studios lot where Glee films. She adopted two of them, cats Claude and Sheila, and helped match the others with costar Heather Morris and one of the show’s directors.

Lea Michele Opens Up About Cory Monteith’s Death: “There Was No Greater Man”

Chrisie      Uncategorized      0 Comments

Save for a few tweets and her heartfelt appearance at the Teen Choice Awards, Lea Michele has said very little about her late boyfriend, Cory Monteith. That all changed on Tuesday, Oct. 8, when the actress addressed his death during a Glee panel with costars Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch, as well as show creator Ryan Murphy.

Speaking to TV Week Australia, the 27-year-old actress described the Oct. 10 tribute episode to Monteith’s character, Finn Hudson, as “perfect.”

“I feel like, for me personally, I’ve lost two people: Cory and Finn,” Michele said. “We had a beautiful memorial for Cory in the auditorium and some of the cast members sang and people spoke about him. It only felt right that we would do the same thing for Finn, so I felt it was very therapeutic.”

Though many wondered if Michele would quit the show after Monteith died of an accidental drug and alcohol overdose in July, she’s found comfort in getting back to work. “Everyone is asking, ‘Is it hard to do this? Is it hard to be back at work?'” she said. “But the truth is, it’s no harder at work than it is in life, so we might as well all be together as a family supporting each other to get through this together.”

NEWS: Why Dianna Agron doesn’t appear in Cory Monteith’s tribute episode

Michele performs the song “Make You Feel My Love” in the episode titled “The Quarterback.” Originally written by Bob Dylan, the track has been famously covered by Garth Brooks and Adele.

Morrison was blown away by Michele’s touching tribute. “She had one of the first songs we filmed for the episode and she did it so beautifully,” he said. “After, she said something like, ‘It can’t be harder for anyone else than it was for me.'”

Michele’s fortitude was inspirational, according to Morrison. “We knew we had to show up because our leader stepped forward and kind of gave permission to all of us to do it,” he explained. “I don’t think we could have done it without her.”

Asked what she hopes fans will remember most about her late love, Michele replied, “I really woke up every single day feeling like I was being in some sort of spell or something, that I was lucky enough to have him in my life. I feel like what happened with [Monteith’s death] was [miniscule] in the scheme of who he was and his life.”

“There was no greater man than Cory,” she added, “so for the time we spent together I consider myself very lucky.”

Jane Lynch: Losing Cory Monteith Has ‘Just Been Brutal’ for Lea Michele

Chrisie      Updates      0 Comments

For Jane Lynch, coping with the loss of Glee costar Cory Monteith is an ongoing struggle.

“I think that grieving comes in waves,” she told PEOPLE at the Ciroq-sponsored Variety & Women in Film pre-Emmy event in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Friday. “Every day that I go to work, I walk past his trailer, and every time I look at a call sheet I see that his name is not on there. Every time I do a scene with the kids I realize that he’s not there, so you’re reminded in every moment. It’s hard, and it feels like such a waste.”

But while Lynch admits “it’s tough” as she and her castmates continue to mourn the 31-year-old – who died from a lethal combination of heroin and alcohol this past July – her heart goes out to his girlfriend and costar, Lea Michele.

“I know it’s just been brutal for her,” Lynch says. “I never lost a boyfriend when I was 26 years old. I can’t tell her what her experience is. She’s a champion, and she is a rock star, and she is getting through this.”

The Fox show is set to pay tribute to Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, in a special episode airing next month. And after she read the script, Lynch reassured fans on Twitter that it was the “Most beautiful thing.”

But the episode, and the upcoming In Memoriam tribute at Sunday’s Emmy awards, are only a part of the collective grieving process.

“I don’t think it’s ever really over for anybody,” she admitted. “It’ll be great for the fans that we’re shining a light on this, that it happened, because I know it affected a lot of people in the country, so everybody can grieve together.”
